Deborah Black is a dance and theatre artist, writer, and teacher.

Currently she is writing her first book, “Fork”, with support from an incredible community of writers led by Chris Wells. It observes the cultural crossovers she has made from Appalachia to New York City to Europe on her quest to be an artist.

Black’s teaching and performance practice grapples in the space between dance and theatre and includes Six Viewpoints improvisation, Grotowski, Delsarte, Jean Hamilton’s Floor Barre, and postmodern movement and dance styles. She continues to develop this research with UK-based theatre director, Natasha Nixon.

She is the founder and facilitator of an on-line community of artists studying Mary Overlie’s Six Viewpoints.

Deborah taught physical theatre and dance at the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg. She taught guest and master classes at Goldsmith’s University London, NYU’s Experimental Theatre Wing, Drama Studio London, Ohio University, Skidmore College, Rowan University, James Madison University, University of South Florida, as well as private workshops in New York City and all across Europe. She will teach at the International Dance Day Festival in Lebanon in 2020.
