Ephemera

In a final co-creation with our teacher, Mary Overlie, Ephemera is a dance theater performance that explores entropy and the emergence of difference in our universe. Amidst a forest of sequined cook’s aprons and caps, vacuums, microwaves, and clowns, Ephemera makes visible the invisible.

Connection during a time of physical* distancing**

*physical - our moving bodies

**distancing - the space between us

During this workshop, we will notice how Space and Movement, two of the Six Viewpoints, are already shared between us. First we will connect to our senses and gravity through movement. Then we will work on perceiving just how much 1.5 - 2m is in our own spaces.  Finally, we will see if we can observe one another through our computer screens, perhaps pass movements between us, and gather the ways in each changing moment of feeling connected while keeping our distance.

During the 18 October session at Quartito Azul, we will revisit all of these ideas along with the added challenge/joy of being in the same room together.

Listening, Writing, and Re-embodying: Poetry meets Movement

Join us - registration is open!

Poet Alyson Hallett and dance artist Deborah Black dialogue between movement and poetry, asking, what if writing reveals what we don't know we know?

Can it be a way of co-authoring with the parts of ourselves that only speak through a pencil?

Can writing take us into the depths of our bodies, thus creating pathways to re-embodiment, knowing, and therefore re-empowerment?

A starting place for the workshop is learning to listen again. Deborah will introduce the Six Viewpoints practice of presence inspired by choreographer, Mary Overlie. Participants will open up their bodies to a myriad of connections with space, emotion, movement, time, the earth, and one other. Within that, can we hear, see, smell, feel, all that we are connected to and experience it fully?

What comes of this listening? Alyson will introduce writing exercises and the invitation to share what is written, to make known what is going on inside the body and mind as it moves. We will work towards an understanding of our bodies as an act of re-empowerment as we bring together our thoughts, feelings and actions to the page and into the room to inspire others.

Becoming Known: An experiment in creating from text

Everyone brings a text - original, prose, poem, play - something asking to be worked with and/or known more intimately. We work slowly to connect with our bodies and voices. We open up to watch and listen to each other, receiving words and actions. We loosen our hands to write from our bodies, from our experience. We enter into the unknown to create. What do the words tell us? What do we need to communicate? Maybe a song, a painting, a dance, a piece of theatre, an essay, or something we can’t yet know.

The Six Viewpoints

Originated by dancer/choreographer, Mary Overlie, The Viewpoints deconstruct the materials used in performance: space, time, shape, emotion, story, and movement, opening up their infinite possibilities. This workshop will include a brief introduction to the theoretical framework of the Viewpoints as well as taking a closer look at the materials through improvisation and experimentation.

Space as Story

SPACE AS STORY
What story does a space or place tell? What story could it tell? How do space, the body and language work together to become a story, whether narrative or abstract?

In this four-hour workshop, we will challenge and expand our knowledge of the materials of space and story for performance-making. The afternoon will be based in the Six Viewpoints theory and practice.

Originated by dancer/choreographer, Mary Overlie, the Viewpoints deconstruct the materials used in performance: space, time, shape, emotion, story, and movement, opening up their infinite possibilities. The study of the Viewpoints introduces performance makers to a clear vocabulary of materials to spark research or new perspective on their own work.

The afternoon will include a brief introduction to the theoretical framework of the Viewpoints and exercises to localise the materials of space and story. Then we will put space and story in communication with one another through improvisation and experimentation to find greater and greater storytelling possibilities.

This workshop is for performers, directors and choreographers, but dramaturgs, designers and artists of all disciplines are also welcome.

No prior movement experience is necessary.

An experiment in toppling and examining hierarchies in embodied spaces using the Postmodern practice and theory of the Six Viewpoints as articulated by the choreographer and dancer, Mary Overlie. We will move, play, and write poetry during this four hour workshop at Lake Studios in Berlin.
